Building on our extremely strong track record in the education sector, F P Hurley successfully secured the mechanical and electrical contract for this state-of-the-art high school in Barry. The school building project (an overall cost of £29 million) is part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme. The new school will replace the existing Whitmore High School, which will remain operational throughout the project, before being demolished once the new school is open to pupils.
The new school will feature 70 general classrooms along with two drama and activity studios. There will also be an ALN Suite, which will provide the space and resources to support students with additional learning needs. Other features will include a spacious multi-functional hall, a music studio and a dining hall. The new school will provide excellent sporting facilities with both indoor and outdoor spaces, including an all weather pitch and a multi-use games court.
Minimal Disruption
The challenge for the team will be to deliver the programme with minimal disruption to the existing school site. The staff and pupils will transfer across to the new building for September 2021 to allow for the demolition of the existing school buildings and the construction of the sports facilities.
Sustainability Measures
The project aims to achieve BREEAM Excellent. The team is assisting with this through sustainability measures on the LTHW heating, natural ventilation, VRV installation, solar photovoltaic system and energy-efficient lighting controls.
