F P Hurley Delivering Major Decarbonisation Project at Warwick Hospital

We’re pleased to announce that F P Hurley has been awarded a major decarbonisation project at Warwick Hospital with on-site works starting December 2023. The £9 million project, which was procured through The Carbon and Energy Fund (CEF), to cut carbon and energy costs for Warwick Hospital and takes a whole building approach using a range of measures to target carbon savings of 11,313 tonnes CO2.

The project will significantly reduce South Warwickshire University Foundation Trust’s carbon footprint at the site and works involve the upgrade of the power supply, installation of air source and water source heat pumps, and installation of new district heating mains feeding the satellite plantrooms. The works also include the installation of solar PV panels and a comprehensive upgrade of the windows to help the Trust meet their goal of achieving Net Zero.

The fifteen year Energy Infrastructure Project Agreement will aim to reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint by 11,313 tCO2.

The PV installation will generate circa 150,000 kWh of electricity which will reduce the yearly electricity cost by circa £47,000 . The Trust is targeting a total reduction of £135,000 reduction in energy and maintenance costs each year.

The project has been funded through phase 3b of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) for affordable, low carbon energy efficiency upgrades across the public sector and will be delivered through the Carbon and Energy Fund Framework 5 (CEF), which has been specifically created to fund complex energy infrastructure upgrades for public sector organisations. The Trust received circa £8.1m from grant funding.

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and is delivered by Salix Finance.

Andy Yates, Head of Projects at the CEF, said:

We were pleased to be asked by the Trust to lead on the development of their Salix application and subsequent procurement of their energy efficiency and energy generation project. Working closely with the Trust and CEF framework contractors, the Trust has chosen a solution that has created an efficient low carbon centralised heat network, which has enabled them to decommission a large number of smaller less efficient boilers which are cumulatively oversized for the Hospital’s demand. Together with fabric measures and solar PV, the Trust has taken a big stride towards it’s 2040 net zero target.
