Expansion of our Electrical Services Design and Installation Department
F P Hurley initially launched its dedicated in-house electrical services design department in 2019 to undertake electrical design and coordination work for M&E contracts. This was then followed in March 2022 by the introduction of installation operatives into the electrical team. This provided an extension to the range of services the company could offer, and creating significant new opportunities through a stable platform for growth. The team continues to grow, allowing us to deliver electrical installations alongside our well-established mechanical services colleagues. Our focus remains clear; to match the reputation of the mechanical services department by delivering exceptional quality installations, on time, within budget, and to exceed the expectations of our clients. The electrical department is prepared for significant expansion in the near future, and the aim is to build on our growing presence in the electrical services arena and by combining our mechanical and electrical services offerings inhouse, will improve our marketability and create new opportunities for the company.
From an operational perspective, the team plan to continue their investment in people and talent. The department currently employs an experienced management team made up of Estimators, Design and BIM Engineers, Project Managers, Undergraduate Design Trainee, Electrical Supervisors, Electricians and Mates. The department is headed up by Simon Williams, Electrical Manager, who has excellent leadership qualities. Simon is positioned to further develop the electrical department in the future and also to deliver the strategic growth plans. The team’s combined skills and expertise ensures they are able to deliver quality projects. Simon plans to employ more talented staff and operatives, and to work with the supply chain partners to aid the growth of the department.
The company has recently joined the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) as an Approved Contractor, which demonstrates compliance and competence in the electrical services industry. As part of the approval process, which was led by Simon Williams, Andrew Powell and Kevin Pratt, the department underwent a full assessment of their electrical installations, QA systems, safe systems of work, and competence. In particular, Kevin’s contribution during the assessment was the key to our success, by demonstrating his extensive knowledge of the BS7671 wiring regulations, and his practical inspection and testing skills. Through our NICEIC membership, Kevin will take up the role of Qualified Supervisor, responsible for checking test results, ensuring quality and compliance of our electrical installations, and writing up and issuing certification on behalf of the company. Simon will have responsibility as the Principal Duty Holder (PDH), ensuring that there are systems in place for all electrical work which is undertaken being carried out by competent persons. As the PDH, Simon will also ensure all staff and operatives are adequately trained and are fully qualified in the use of the current edition of the Wiring Regulations.
We have successfully delivered a number of electrical projects, which include decarbonisation works at a Primary School in Wells, and Student Residences at Exeter University. We have also carried out more extensive electrical works at a C of E Primary School in Paignton, Devon, and more locally at the Aviation Centre, Bridgend.
The company has secured some exciting new projects, which include a decarbonisation Photovoltaic Car Park Canopy and a replacement switchboard project at South Wales Police, Bridgend, a lighting upgrade at Ystrad Mynach Primary School, Hengoed, and a lift installation project at Mount Gould Hospital, Plymouth.
Other future prospects include significantly more complex and higher value projects with our key clients. This expansion to the business offers a highly attractive end to end proposition across mechanical and electrical services, focusing on outstanding technical expertise and project delivery.
