A Fruitful Collaboration
F P Hurley’s Social Value Team has teamed up with Rhydypenau Primary School in Cardiff to help create their very own orchard which they will manage and use as a valuable learning resource. A total of 15 fruit trees were donated by the company, made up of different varieties of pear, plum and apple trees to enhance biodiversity and create new habitats for birds and insects.
The project came about after the Year 5 children wrote some inspirational emails explaining how they wanted to develop their outdoor spaces into areas where they could connect with nature and further their learning about the natural environment. One of their goals was to create an orchard on school grounds where they could interact and care for the trees, develop a respect for the power of nature and the food it provides.
The arrival of the fruit trees caused a lot of excitement and the children have already set about planting the trees to create the orchard.
The Social Value Team were delighted to support the pupils and facilitate learning in and about the natural environment. Every opportunity to explore and interact with the natural world is hugely valuable and brings a whole host of amazing benefits; from mitigating the effects of climate change to creating a sense of wonder and tranquillity and reducing stress. This is something that we are passionate about and seek to support wherever we can.
