Flagship Project on Track for Cardiff University
It’s been almost 7 months since F P Hurley began the mechanical installation at the Centre for Student Life, which is one of Cardiff’s University’s most significant developments. F P Hurley was appointed by BAM Construction and has a large team of engineers and supply chain partners on site to deliver the challenging city centre project.
Complying with pandemic restrictions meant the team had to implement COVID 19 safe operating procedures from the very beginning. Despite these challenging circumstances, the team have adapted successfully and work has progressed steadily to ensure that important milestones are reached.
The project is being constructed in three distinct phases to ensure that students can continue to access the Student Union building directly behind the new development. The Phase 1 build allowing a temporary tunnel to be formed through the new build and maintain access on to the main street, Park Place, from the Student Union. Phases 2 and 3 builds commenced once the tunnel was constructed and were later joined up allowing internal work to start throughout the site. F P Hurley’s team have made excellent progress to date, with all phases of the build well underway.
Take a look at the Centre for Student Life’s progress so far, in this ‘Virtual Topping Out’ ceremony:
When completed, the Centre will be home to a range of services including support with study, health and wellbeing, preparing for the future and advice on living in Cardiff. The Centre will also offer additional social study spaces, consultation rooms, a 550-seat auditorium and quiet contemplation spaces. Work is expected to be completed in summer 2021 ready to welcome students in the new academic year.
