Community Project: New Outdoor Facilities Delivered for Y Bont Family Centre in Bridgend
At F P Hurley, we aim to leave a lasting positive legacy in the communities we work with. We have had a strong presence in Bridgend since 1949, and when Adrian Hurley started his tenure as Managing Director he was determined to engage with the local community organisations who provide essential services.
Recently, we have been working closely with Y Bont Family Centre in Bridgend. Y Bont are a local registered charity dedicated to providing outstanding care and support to children with learning disabilities and their families. They are able to provide an excellent level of care and support mainly thanks to fundraising and charitable donations from their supporters.
When Vicky Midgley, lead member of our Charity Committee, and Adrian Hurley reached out to Y Bont, it was clear we could help, and our next community project began to take shape. After a number of meetings and discussions it was established they were in desperate need of storage facilities to free up space in the main building. The project involved building an external storage facility along with a greenhouse for the children to prepare and grow vegetables.
Vicky, who project managed the entire programme, along with a team of volunteers from F P Hurley set about busily transforming the outside space, giving up their own time and often whole weekends to deliver this project for Y Bont. Several supply chain members also assisted with the project, including Dean Hyde Builders, Phillips Electrical Services, BSS, Travis Perkins and HTIC.
Over an eight week period mainly working weekends, as the building remained occupied, the team demolished the existing sheds and removed the bases. They poured a new 9m x 3m concrete base and constructed a 9m x 3m walk-though, fully shelved, storage facility with polycarbonate roof, painted walls/floor and lighting. They also built a safe greenhouse with potting benches and tools were provided to help with the children’s development.
Vicky Midgley, F P Hurley Charity Project Manager, Said:
We are lucky to have a lot of committed and kind-hearted individuals working for the company. They’re always willing to dedicate their time to helping others. It’s great to see what we’ve achieved here, giving the children an opportunity to engage with the new facilities and gain confidence in the new outdoor space. I hope they enjoy their new space, it has certainly been hugely rewarding for us!

New Facilities
Staff at Y Bont are delighted with the project, commenting:
Over the last 4 weeks we have had some incredible support from Hurley Building Services. They have headed up a project that was on our wish list which was for some more storage space. The brilliant team have volunteered their weekends to take down, design and build a fantastic outdoor storage shed that is bespoke to our needs at Y Bont. Ensuring that it is accessible for all our staff in both the front and back garden. Not only have they done this, but they have also supported our enrichment corner whereupon we have a greenhouse, planters and vegetable patch. Their support has been invaluable.
