F P Hurley Volunteers with Matthew’s House – ‘Hospitality and Hope in the Heart of Swansea’
Several members of our team were delighted to spend a day at Matthew’s House last week, a homeless charity based in Swansea. Matthew’s House runs Matt’s Café which provides regular access to nutritious meals for people that are suffering food poverty and those who are homeless or facing homelessness. The meals are made from donated surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away and the café operates on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. The centre, which is run from a renovated Grade 2 listed church building in the heart of Swansea, also provides valuable services such as showering and washing facilities along with their ‘The Homeless Period’ initiative which supplies dignity packs to those who need them.
A team of eight F P Hurley employees spent the day carrying out essential maintenance and cleaning tasks for Matthew’s House that included painting and decorating, plumbing repairs, donations sorting and deep cleaning the kitchen. Our team, though exhausted by the end of the day, thoroughly enjoyed supporting a great cause and the team at Matthew’s House clearly make a massive difference to those using their service. Describing their day as “awe-inspiring and the most valuable and rewarding work you can do”, it was certainly time well spent and something we are keen to continue doing more of in the future.
