Job Vacancy – Apprenticeship – Building Services Engineering Installer / Craftsperson

We are looking for a Building Services Engineering Installer/Heating & Ventilation apprentice to join our busy team operating in the South West of England, operating under our Bristol office. You will learn all aspects of Mechanical Building Services Installation on various construction sites throughout the region whilst studying towards your Building Services Engineering Installer/Heating & Ventilation Standard.

You will be working towards your Building Services Engineering Installer/Heating & Ventilation Standard by assisting in a range of duties relevant to your studies, you will also be set aside time to complete your learning and attend college. You will be required to work on various construction sites in the region, which may include schools, universities, hospitals, offices, student residences, factories and other commercial buildings. Your will be paired with an experienced and competent mentor and supervisor to ensure that you get the right learning opportunities to achieve the qualification.

The Building Service Engineering Installer Apprenticeship will allow you to gain the qualification:

L2 NVQ Diploma in Heating and Ventilation Commercial Installation (24 months)

There will be the opportunity to progress to the L3 NVQ Diploma Building Services Craftsperson (a further 24 months) after successful completion of the above.

Description of Role

A Building Services Engineering makes buildings work. It is a specialist branch of engineering within the construction sector. Installers, install components of large-scale industrial and commercial systems such as heating, chilled water, hot water and cold water which are used for heating workplaces such as those found in industrial and commercial buildings like office blocks, factories, schools and hospitals. These engineering systems operate by moving temperature controlled water around the inside of buildings, providing heating and cooling, and utilise fossil fuels and sustainable energy systems.

Building Services Installers have a basic knowledge of the systems and how the components within systems relate to each other. They also, under close but not constant supervision:

• Plan allocated work tasks to install system components
• Undertake allocated work tasks in testing system components
• Assist in pre-commission testing
• Undertake allocated work tasks in de-commissioning
• Installers are able to demonstrate competence in the health and safety, communication, quality control and environmental requirements appropriate to their scope of work

Working Safely

• Apply relevant safety legislation, codes of practice and safe working practices to self and others in building services engineering working environments

Planning, Preparing and Working Sustainably

• Plan, organise and undertake the installation of industrial and commercial system components in ways which use resources effectively to complete allocated work tasks, effectively, safely and with consideration to environmental impact using industry recognised practices.
• Prepare work areas in new and existing sites to undertake allocated component installation work tasks ensuring: safe access and egress for self and others is maintained; components, tools and equipment are stored and positioned safely and to allow efficient workflow; mechanical supply services and electrical tool supply connections are correctly identified; and the need for other trades support is identified and arranged.

 Installing Components

• Apply pipework fabrication, installation and jointing techniques for industrial and commercial system components to industry recognised standards. This includes prefabricated and/or modularised components and distribution systems, and including the assembly, positioning, orientation and fixing of storage vessels, heat emitters, pressure vessels, controls.
• Undertake allocated work tasks in the testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning and decommissioning of industrial and commercial cold water systems, hot water systems, heating systems and chilled water systems.

Weekly Wage:  You will be paid in accordance with our trade body, Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) National Agreement pay structure for apprentices- found  here.

Working Week: 37.5 hours per week, 8 AM to 4 PM Monday to Thursday and 8AM to 3PM Friday (time on site) and 0.5 hour for lunch

Future Prospects: Option to complete the L3 Building Services Craftsperson apprenticeship (further 24 months) once the L2 Building Services Installer has been achieved, with possible permanent position upon completion of apprenticeship. Skills required: Some experience in Microsoft Office/IT literacy and a good level of numeracy and literacy is needed.

*Please note that working away is likely to be a part of the work at times, lodging will be provided. Some occasional weekend work or overtime may feature.
