The new school will provide places for 1200 pupils and is being built within the grounds of the existing high school. Once built, there will be a two week decant period where pupils will be moved across into the new facility. With the old school vacated, the demolition phase will then begin.
Pencoedtre High School, Barry
Main Contractor: Bouygues
Contract Value: £5 Million
Client: Vale of Glamorgan Council
The project involved the construction of a brand new secondary school for Pencoedtre High School in Barry. Located within the grounds of the existing school, the three storey building will provide state of the art facilities for 21st century learning including some impressive sports facilities. This includes a four court sports hall, all weather floodlit hockey pitch, rugby and football pitches and performance areas for theatre and dance.
The build forms part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme, which also recently delivered nearby Whitmore High School in Barry. Construction began in Spring 2020 and the new school is set to open its doors ready for the Autumn term in 2021.
Running simultaneously to the demolition phase will be the construction of the sports pitches. Once the final section of the demolition is complete, construction will begin on the MUGA pitches and new staff car park.
