Delivery of Emergency COVID-19 Ward at University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff

Rather than resorting to the ‘quick fix’ methods constructors use at other locations, the Health Board have requested that we build the ward to a clinical standard, which will futureproof the area, allowing it to remain in use and provide winter bed space in the long-term.

The works need to be completed within a three-week time frame, so the team have been working around the clock to deliver what would have normally been a 16-20 week project. The F P Hurley team are putting in around 1500 man-hours within seventeen days to ensure we hit the commissioning and completion target dates.

Glen Hopson, F P Hurley Project Manager, said:

The team effort has been incredible. We’ve been working with suppliers to procure materials as quickly as possible and get the works done in time. We needed to mobilise immediately and have a team working 24/7 in shifts to ensure we deliver this for the NHS. We have been on site at Llandough Hospital delivering the Spinal Rehabilitation works since December 2018, so we know the site well. This meant our team could adapt very quickly and we started the new works the very same day.

Our team is installing vital mechanical services, including:

• LTHW heating services and LST radiators
• MVHR ventilation units and ductwork/grilles
• Domestic water services and sanitaryware for wards and patient showering facilities
• Oxygen and Vacuum medical gas services for each new bed
