Delivery of Emergency COVID-19 Ward at University Hospital Llandough, Cardiff
F P Hurley are converting a vacant storage ‘shell and core’ construction within Llandough Hospital, which was left bare during a construction project in 2012, into a 20-bed COVID-19 ward. As we were already on site delivering the Spinal Rehabilitation project at the Hospital in partnership with Willmott Dixon, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board requested that the team construct a new COVID-19 ward to increase capacity for patients with the virus within the hospital.
Rather than resorting to the ‘quick fix’ methods constructors use at other locations, the Health Board have requested that we build the ward to a clinical standard, which will futureproof the area, allowing it to remain in use and provide winter bed space in the long-term.
The works need to be completed within a three-week time frame, so the team have been working around the clock to deliver what would have normally been a 16-20 week project. The F P Hurley team are putting in around 1500 man-hours within seventeen days to ensure we hit the commissioning and completion target dates.
Glen Hopson, F P Hurley Project Manager, said:
The team effort has been incredible. We’ve been working with suppliers to procure materials as quickly as possible and get the works done in time. We needed to mobilise immediately and have a team working 24/7 in shifts to ensure we deliver this for the NHS. We have been on site at Llandough Hospital delivering the Spinal Rehabilitation works since December 2018, so we know the site well. This meant our team could adapt very quickly and we started the new works the very same day.
Our team is installing vital mechanical services, including:
- LTHW heating services and LST radiators
- MVHR ventilation units and ductwork/grilles
- Domestic water services and sanitaryware for wards and patient showering facilities
- Oxygen and Vacuum medical gas services for each new bed
Ian Jones, Director at Willmott Dixon, expressed his gratitude to the team:
We wanted to express our gratitude in delivering what is another fantastic project in just over 3 weeks! Given this ward is a full HTM specification compliant build, makes this an incredible achievement. Your continued commitment and effort on these schemes have been recognised and we applaud you and your teams. Please pass on our thanks to your teams for sacrificing their evenings, weekends and bank holidays to deliver in challenging environments, a 1st class scheme! Remarkable efforts that couldn’t have been achieved without the whole team coming together.
Decontamination Shower Units
Also at Llandough Hospital, our team installed mechanical services for the hospital’s temporary decontamination shower units, which will be used to decontaminate and clean ambulances and other equipment.
F P Hurley Supervisor, Carl Myerscough, organised materials and got these works started within an hour of being approached by the Health Board. The works were completed on the same day, meaning showers were ready for use straight away.
